John Negroponte: Distinguished Lecture in International Affairs

The BYU Wheatley Institution's Distinguished Lecture in International Affairs will be John D. Negroponte. 

John D. Negroponte joined McLarty Associates as vice-chairman in 2009, following a distinguished career in diplomacy and national security. Ambassador Negroponte held government positions abroad and in Washington between 1960 and 1997 and again from 2001 to 2008. Since 2009, Ambassador Negroponte has also been the Brady Johnson Distinguished Fellow in Grand Strategy and Senior Lecturer in International Affairs at the Jackson Institute of Yale University, his alma mater.

He has been ambassador to Honduras, Mexico, the Philippines, the United Nations, and Iraq. In Washington he served twice on the National Security Council staff, first as director for Vietnam in the Nixon Administration and then as deputy national security advisor under President Reagan. He has also held a cabinet level position as the first director of national intelligence under President George W. Bush. His most recent position in government was as deputy secretary of state, where he served as the State Department’s chief operating officer.

While in the private sector from 1997 to 2001, Ambassador Negroponte was executive vice president of the McGraw-Hill Companies, with responsibility for overseeing the company’s international activities. During those years he was also chairman of the French-American Foundation.

Ambassador Negroponte serves as chairman of the Council of the Americas/Americas Society. He is also Co-Chairman of the U.S.-Philippines Society and a member of the Secretary of State's Foreign Affairs Policy Board. Since 2013, he has been Chairman of the Intelligence and National Security Alliance.

Ambassador Negroponte has received numerous awards in recognition of his more than four decades of public service, including the State Department’s Distinguished Service Medal on two separate occasions, the highest award which can be conferred by the secretary of state, and on January 16, 2009, President Bush awarded Ambassador Negroponte the National Security Medal for his outstanding contributions to U.S. national security.

Mark Callister, Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in the Department of Communications, will deliver the devotional address on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

Mark Callister received a Ph. D. in communication from the University of Arizona (1997), an M.B.A from BYU (1991), and B.A.s in English and international relations from BYU (1988). He teaches courses in advertising, consumer behavior, persuasion, and research methods. He formerly taught at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. His research centers on family and the media, visual imagery in print advertising, and portrayals of elderly in the media. He has published articles in the Journal of Current Issues & Research in Advertising, Journal of Aging Studies, The Encyclopedia of Human Emotions, Journal of Language and Social Psychology, Oncology Nursing Forum, and Evaluation & the Health Professions.   As a specialist in theories of persuasion and team work, he has consulted for Commonwealth Edison, Caterpillar, the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs, Roquette-America, Institute for Applied Criminal Justice, and others. He was selected as the Outstanding Teacher in June 2002 for the College of Fine Arts and Communication at Western Illinois University and awarded the Wayne N. Thompson Distinguished Professorship of Communication Award, 2000-01.

Swofford, in addition to his BYU Broadcasting position, is the director of media for the LDS Church Missionary department and had a major part in bringing about The District series, which follows LDS missionaries in order to provide new missionaries with useful training. Lloyd Newell, professor of Church History and Doctrine, will deliver the devotional on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

Lloyd D. Newell holds a M.A. in communications and a Ph.D. in marriage, family, and human development from BYU, where he is a professor of Church History & Doctrine and an associated faculty member in the School of Family Life. He has addressed audiences in 45 states and more than a dozen other countries through his seminars and keynote speaking engagements.

He has been a television news anchorman and a news magazine host in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. He continues to serve as host and announcer for many local and national programs and events. He is also the author of more than a dozen books and numerous articles. He has served as announcer and writer for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir inspirational broadcast, "Music and the Spoken Word" since 1990.  Lloyd and his wife, Karmel, are the parents of four children.
