Film: It Started With Eve

Jan 13 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Singing sensation Deanna Durbin was introduced to the screen in 1936 by director Henry Koster, and her box-office hits saved Universal from bankruptcy. This “infectious, delightful” (Variety) comedy has a billionaire (Laughton) playing cupid for his son (Cummings), who brings a hat-check girl (Durbin) to his father’s bedside to fulfill his father’s dying wish: to meet his son’s fiancée. That she is not what his son claims launches a story that, according to the New York Times, has “what it takes to make a fresh and pleasing film,” putting it among the best romantic comedies ever made.

UNIVERSAL PICTURES. 1941. 1 HR. 30 MINS. DIRECTOR: HENRY KOSTER.

Film: Smoky

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Jan 27 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Starring: Fred MacMurray, Anne Baxter, Burl Ives, Bruce Cabot.

The popular Will James novel about a horse befriended by a cowboy drifter and then taken away from him became this stunning Technicolor feature. A strong supporting cast, including balladeer Burl Ives in his motion picture debut, made Smoky a top moneymaker for the studio. It was photographed at a number of Utah locations, including Duck Creek, Kanab Canyon, and Zion National Park. It has never been on home video.

20TH CENTURY-FOX. 1946. 1 HR. 27 MINS. TECHNICOLOR. DIRECTOR: LOUIS KING.

Film: Our Relations

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Feb 10 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Starring: Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Sidney Toler, James Finlayson.

This inventive feature has the boys playing dual roles as long-separated siblings—two respectable married men and two devil-may-care freighter crew members—who happen on one another in the same town in this twist on Shakespeare’s Comedy of Errors. One film historian noted that it is “one of the most handsome Laurel and Hardy films, and because of its production values, one that holds up best today.”

With Thicker Than Water. 1935. 21 mins.

HAL ROACH PRODUCTIONS/METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER. 1936. 1 HR. 13 MINS.
DIRECTOR: HARRY LACHMAN.

Film: The Lost Patrol

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Feb 24 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Starring: Victor McLaglen, Boris Karloff, Wallace Ford, Reginald Denny.
This was studio producer Merian Cooper’s first collaboration with his later production partner John Ford. It tells the story of a British patrol in the Mesopotamian desert during World War I that is systematically decimated by unseen Arab snipers. The landmark score by Max Steiner intensifies the drama in a film that, Ford biographer Scott Eyman writes, “stands firm today, lean, concise, achieving its melodramatic effects with ease and economy.”

RKO RADIO PICTURES. 1934. 1 HR. 13 MINS. DIRECTOR: JOHN FORD.

Film: 5 Fingers

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Mar 10 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Starring: James Mason, Danielle Darrieux, Michael Rennie, Walter Hampden.
James Mason gives a riveting performance as the unassuming valet to the British ambassador to Turkey, who simultaneously photographed and conveyed intelligence to the Germans, including plans for the D-Day invasion in 1944. This real-life story of master spy Elyesa Bazna is given first-class treatment by director Joseph Mankiewicz (The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and All About Eve), who visited with Bazna while filming on location in Turkey. 20TH CENTURY-FOX. 1952. 1 HR. 48 MINS.

DIRECTOR: JOSEPH L. MANKIEWICZ.

Film: The Adventures of Don Juan

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Mar 24 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Swashbuckling Flynn, who swaggered his way through Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Sea Hawk, is at his best in this tongue-in-cheek parody of his own romantic image. Set in 17th-century Spain, this version has a reformed Don Juan wooing Queen Margaret, much to the dismay of King Phillip II and his sinister minister, the Duke de Lorca. Max Steiner’s energetic music complements the lavish sets and light-hearted mood of what was Flynn’s last big-budget film appearance. Special guests and Hollywood composers John Morgan and Bill Stromberg will share their tales of restoring and rerecording this classic score.

WARNER BROS. 1948. 1 HR. 50 MINS. TECHNICOLOR. DIRECTOR: VINCENT SHERMAN.

Film: The King of Kings

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

Apr 14 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Cecil B. DeMille’s moving story of the Christ has been exhibited throughout the world since its 1927 release. “So reverential is the spirit of . . . DeMille’s ambitious pictorial transcription of the life of Jesus of Nazareth, the Man,” wrote the New York Times, “that during its initial screening . . . hardly a whispered word was uttered among the audience. . . . It is, in fact, the most impressive of all motion pictures.” We are showing the seldom-seen original full-length version with the added dimension of live organ accompaniment by virtuoso Blaine Gale.

CINEMA CORP. OF AMERICA/PATHÉ. 1927. 2 HRS. 35 MINS. DIRECTOR: CECIL B. DEMILLE.

Film: The Spirit of St. Louis

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

May 19 - 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM

James Stewart was elated to portray the man he had long admired in this big-screen tribute to airmail pilot Charles A. Lindbergh and his history-making 33 1/2-hour transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. Director Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard) went outside his customary subject matter to helm this ambitious epic. On-location filming in CinemaScope adds to the drama of this tremendous feat that we will celebrate 90 years after Lucky Lindy’s achievement.

WARNER BROS. 1957. 2 HRS. 15 MINS. COLOR. CINEMASCOPE. DIRECTOR: BILLY WILDER.

Film: This is the Army

University Events - Fri, 12/02/2016 - 15:00

May 26 - 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM

Famed composer Irving Berlin wrote this all-soldier show that toured the United States to raise money—which it did in the millions—for Army Emergency Relief. This film version of his spirited songs, with Kate Smith’s legendary rendition of “God Bless America” as the centerpiece, stirred a nation at war and remains a powerful time capsule of dedication and sacrifice. Berlin even makes an appearance to sing one of his own compositions. WARNER BROS. 1943. TECHNICOLOR. 2 HRS. 1 MIN.

DIRECTOR: MICHAEL CURTIZ.
