Until recently, she was a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution. She has been on the faculty of Yale University and George Mason University, and is the author of Love and Economics: Why the Laissez-Faire Family doesn't work.

Raymond E. Beckham was a leader in education at BYU for 42 years. He was the driving force behind the BYU Evening school program, the BYU Travel Studies program, Aspen Grove, and founded the New York Internship program for Communications majors. The lecture was established in 1995 in honor of Ray Beckham’s late wife, Ida Lee.

William Damon, of Stanford University, and Dave Matthews, of the Kettering Foundation, will speak at the Wheatley Institution's mini conference, "Education & Democracy: Educating Citizens for a Life of Virtue & Purpose"

One of the world’s leading scholars of human development, William Damon is Professor of Education at Stanford University and the Director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence. Prior to joining Stanford in 1997, he was University Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Human Development at Brown University.

David Mathews is president and chief executive officer of the Kettering Foundation. The foundation expanded its focus to look beyond scientific solutions, recognizing that problems like world hunger are not technical problems, but rather political problems. In the 1970s, the foundation began to concentrate on democratic politics, particularly the role of citizens. Mathews was elected to the Kettering Foundation board of trustees in 1972, and in 1981, he became its president and CEO.

International Affairs Lecture: West Point's Col. Suzanne Nielsen

Col. Suzanne Nielsen of West Point Academy will be the speaker for the Wheatley Institution Distinguished Lecture in International Affairs.

Colonel Suzanne C. Nielsen is an associate professor and the Director of the International Relations Program at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Responsible for an academic major and associated electives, as well as a core course taught to every cadet, she teaches courses in international relations theory and national security. She also chairs the Academy’s Scholarship Committee which selects and prepares cadets to compete for the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, and other nationally-competitive scholarships.
