Student Scheduling During Holidays
The following are guidelines for supervisors in scheduling students (United
States Citizens [Resident] and International) for work during school holidays
and breaks. The work week is from 12 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Friday.

Thanksgiving

All Students (resident and international):

May work 8 hours per day Wednesday through Sunday during the Thanksgiving
holiday period.

Christmas Break

Resident Students:

May begin working 8 hours per day AFTER their last Fall Semester final,
through the day before Winter Semester begins.

International Students:

May work 8 hours per day starting the day after the last day of Fall Semester
through the day before Winter Semester begins. English Language Center
students will need a new work permit from the International Office to continue
working over the Christmas holidays.

Winter Holidays

All students (resident and international) may work 8 hours per day on Martin
Luther Kind Day (January) and Presidents Day (February).

Spring and Summer

Resident AND International Students may begin working 8 hours per day after
the last day of Winter Semester. (Resident students need to be enrolled for 3
credit hours, both Spring and Summer terms or FICA tax will be withheld.
International students are exempt from FICA.)

Work Hours:

Because of the intensity of the shorter spring and summer terms, departments
should be cautions as they schedule student employees to work. The following
is the recommended number of hours students should work:

Students enrolled in 6.0 or more credit hours per term should work no more
than 20 hours per week

Students enrolled in 3.5 to 5.5 credit hours per term should work no more than
30 hours per week

Students enrolled in up to 3.0 credit hours per term should work no more than
40 hours per week. When allowing a full-time student to work more than 20
hours, the department and the student should consider such factors as year in
school, number of credits carried and the types of classes taken.
